Historical ArtHistorical ArtA picture is worth a thousand words. Oh how true that is! Historical art is an excellent way to learn about history, it uses the sense of sight to open up old, forgotten worlds. Through art and photography we can learn about fashion, architecture, decorum, and have a physical connection with famous people. For instance: Would George Washington be as popular as he is today if his portrait had never been painted? Perhaps he would be just as well known but surely the numerous paintings of him have helped to make him "REAL" to each new generation. Daring deeds and historical events are worthy of study and historical art is a fantastic way to bring them to life. Historical Art |

Historical BooksHistorical BooksHave you ever read a truly remarkable book that makes you feel like you have taken a trip to a different time period? There is just something delightful about historical books! It is such a window of opportunity to meet new people, places, and eras. Just by opening a book you could find yourself fighting against pirates on the Spanish Main or living a quiet life in a rural New England home. Books can also expand our knowledge of by gone days. Through cookbooks we can learn what they ate, how they ate, when they ate, etc. The customs of different eras are usually brought to light in historical books. Historical CostumesHistorical CostumesOne of the most fascinating parts of history is that of garments. Each distinct era has it’s own costumes. For instance if you were to see a woman in a sunbonnet and simple dress you would automatically think of a pioneer and if you saw a man in a red uniform you would know that he was a Red Coat during the American Revolution. Costumes help bring a part of history alive in a very real sense. Dates and events are only facts, but a piece of clothing is something that can be touched and seen. You will find a wide range of historical costumes available on this web site, from ancient times to 1950’s. Historical Costumes |

Historical Games and ToyHistorical Games and ToyThroughout the centuries mankind has devised many forms of entertainment and diversion to occupy their spare time. It is interesting to think of people who lived hundreds of years ago enjoying a game of chess or riding on a rocking horse. Although many things have changed in our culture, in some ways children still love the same things as their ancestors did. Girls adore dolls and boys enjoy swords. Historical Games and Toy |

Historical MoviesHistorical MoviesOne of my all time favorite movies is Anne of Green Gables. I still remember the first time my family watched it. My sisters and I were allowed to stay up past midnight (an unheard of thing in our house) on a Saturday night to finish it. Thus began my love for historical movies. Some of the most powerful events in history have been transferred to film for viewers to experience. Through movies we can be immersed into another era. The costumes, music, etiquette, and furniture all bring the "realness" of another time period to life. The only thing that could top a movie would be a visit to a living history sight. Historical MusicHistorical MusicThe strain of Yankee Doodle streamed through the air as its jolly melody lifted the spirits of the Continental soldiers. As the wagon train rested for the evening, a banjo could be heard playing the lively tune, Oh Susanna. When the United States was involved in the Civil War, the North declared When Johnny Comes Marching Home as their song and the South claimed Dixie. Music has played a significant part in history. From the first music maker, Jubal, who was the "father of all who played the harp and flute" (Genesis 4:21) to our modern music, songs have a way of reaching into our hearts and creating emotions. The sentiment they generate can cover every human emotion; patriotic songs like the Star Spangled Banner invoke a feeling of pride in our homeland. Military tunes such as Over There, have always stirred the blood. Good old folk songs like Shenandoah remind us of simpler times. Historical Music |
